2. GENERATIVE AI IN CONTENT CREATION

When OpenAI’s ChatGPT-3 was released to the general public in November 2022, the world was introduced to a ground-breaking technology that would forever change how people research and analyze information; create documents, images, and graphical elements; brainstorm and outline ideas; create videos and code; interact with artificial intelligence agents; process and interpret large datasets; and more. Its impact extends to all areas of business, science, economics, medicine, education, engineering sectors, to name a few. While fierce debate surrounds the use of generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in all spheres, we cannot ignore its tremendous benefits—from scientific breakthroughs, to improving access to information, to streamlining workflow, boosting productivity, to time-saving content creation, to bulk information processing, and the like. This unit will introduce you to foundational knowledge and skills relating to genAI.
The approach taken in this text is that of viewing LLMs and AI applications as tools to be used for human purposes. It’s helpful to also be aware of other ways of viewing this technology, including one that situates AI as a subject that is like humans grounded in a complex multifaceted world. This view recognizes that AI arises from a long history and is comprised of many applications, materials, electrical and digital languages and processes that function within various economies, legal domains, political and cultural influences, and social relations. This meta-relational view is becoming the foundation for a deeper understanding of the discomfort and ambiguities we are experiencing as the technology continues to develop. For more on this view, see Standing in the Fire.
